Recovery after a Traumatic Brain Injury Car Accident is a Long Road

It is not secret that car accidents are one of the leading causes of injury in Washington State and across the U.S., but it is important to remember that, most of the time, they are not actually “accidents.” In our experience as car accident lawyers at Pendergast Law, we have seen collisions caused by distracted, fatigued, speeding, and drunk drivers, as well as crashes caused by poorly designed and otherwise dangerous roads. The negligence of drivers and even government agencies leads to the serious injury of innocent motorists and road users. Oftentimes, this includes traumatic brain injuries.

Consequences of TBI

Traumatic brain injury, or TBI, is a common traffic accident injury, as the force of impact from a vehicle can easily cause a driver, passenger, pedestrian, bicyclist, or other road user to hit their head against their vehicle, other people, the road, or other objects. Unfortunately, TBI does not have a quick fix remedy that will make everything better.

The brain is a complex and essential part of the body; it is responsible for all of its functioning. Damage to the brain may never be repaired because brain tissue does not regenerate as other organ tissues might. This does not mean that the brain does not adapt, however. Brain cells that have died as the result of a traumatic brain injury will never regain their function, but it is possible for other parts of the brain to take over that function. This does not happen overnight and traumatic brain injury victims must often undergo months and possibly even years of medical treatment, possible surgery, and rehabilitative therapy to make any recovery. Even after everything that can be done has been done, the victim may be left with cognitive, emotional, or even physical impairments. The worst part of these consequences is that they could have been avoided.
