A rollover accident on Highway 395 near North Spokane this morning took the life of the driver in the rolled vehicle, according to a news report from KXLY.

Investigators say that the driver of the vehicle, a Dodge Ram pickup truck, apparently lost control of the vehicle, which slipped off the side of the road and rolled. The driver was killed when the vehicle rolled over. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time. Investigators have not yet determined whether a mechanical failure or other problem caused the rollover accident.

Rollover accidents are more likely in pickup trucks and SUVs than in other types of vehicles, according to research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In recent years, the rate of rollover accident deaths per 100,000 pickup trucks on the road was 16.24 and the rate for SUVs was 17.71, according to the NHTSA. The rate of deaths in pickup truck rollovers and SUV rollovers was twice the rate of fatal rollovers in passenger cars. Drivers and passengers in pickup trucks and SUVs were at an especially high risk of death in a rollover if they were not wearing their seat belts when the accident occurred.
