Four Tips for Safer Washington Winter Driving

By Pendergast Law on November 20, 2012

Winter in Washington brings rain, sleet, snow, and ice – all factors that can make driving more dangerous. Whether you’re heading out for holiday shopping, going to a party, or just making your everyday commute, you can take steps to make winter driving safer for you and your passengers. Here are four tips for safer winter driving in Washington, courtesy of the Washington State Patrol:

  • Check your car. Make sure tires are properly inflated and have enough tread in roder to handle dangerous winter roads. Check antifreeze and washer fluid levels frequently. Examine hoses and belts for wear and replace them if needed.
  • Pack an emergency kit. First aid supplies, a shovel, a flashlight, a snow scraper, and extra warm clothing and blankets can all be helpful or even life-saving in case of an accident. Consider packing these items into an emergency kit kept in your vehicle for winter driving.
  • Plan ahead. Check weather and traffic reports frequently, including just before you leave. Try to consolidate trips so that you’re not out on the road more than necessary in bad weather.
  • Drive carefully. Leave extra space between your vehicle and the one ahead of you, in case an icy or slippery patch prevents you from braking quickly. Make sure your vehicle’s windows are properly defrosted before pulling onto the road, and use your headlights to make your vehicle easier to see, especially in bad weather.
