Understanding the Risks of Sleepy Driving in Washington

Driving while drowsy isn’t a well-recognized driving risk, according to the National Sleep Foundation. That’s why November includes National Drowsy Driving Prevention Week, which is aimed at warning drivers about the risk of sleepy driving and helping them reduce the risk that their own drowsiness will cause a serious crash.

A recent survey by the AAA Foundation highlighted the risks of drowsy driving. Ninety-six percent of those who responded to the survey said it was “unacceptable” for someone to drive when they were so sleepy they had trouble keeping his or her eyes open. Yet almost 10 percent of those who responded admitted to driving in this state at least once a week, and 33 percent admitted to driving while sleepy in the past month.

Drowsy drivers aren’t unusual on Washington roads, and unfortunately, neither are the accidents they cause. About one in every six U.S. car crashes involves at least one drowsy driver, according to the AAA Foundation. Sleepy driving is a particular risk for professional truck drivers, who spend long hours behind the wheel and often feel pressure to “push through” a long drive instead of taking a needed rest.
