Recognizing the blind spots on a truck

On Behalf of | Mar 10, 2025 | Truck Accident

Large trucks have much bigger blind spots than smaller vehicles. These areas, sometimes called “no-zones,” can be dangerous for drivers.

Knowing where blind spots are can help you avoid trouble around trucks and reduce the risk of serious accidents.

Where are a truck’s blind spots?

A truck’s blind spots are located:

  • In front of the truck: The driver cannot see vehicles directly in front of the cab, especially if they are very close. Trucks need more space to stop, so cutting in too soon can be dangerous.
  • Behind the truck: Because of the truck’s length and height, the driver has a large blind spot directly behind the trailer. Following too closely is risky because it’s likely that the driver cannot see your vehicle.
  • Along both sides: The right side has a bigger blind spot than the left. If you cannot see the truck driver in their side mirror, they probably cannot see you either.

Why are blind spots dangerous?

If a driver stays in a truck’s blind spot for too long, they risk an accident. A truck driver may change lanes, brake or turn without seeing the smaller vehicle. This can lead to serious collisions, especially at high speeds or in heavy traffic.

How to stay safe around trucks

To avoid accidents caused by blind spots, the following steps can help:

  • Stay out of blind spots when possible.
  • Pass trucks efficiently and on the left side.
  • Do not follow too closely or cut in front.
  • Give trucks extra space when merging or stopping.

Even if you take care to avoid blind spots, accidents can still happen. If you have been injured in a truck crash, seeking legal guidance can inform you about your right to personal injury compensation.
