Why is summer known as the “100 Deadliest Days” on the road?

Have you ever heard people say that you’ll need to be careful over the coming summer because you are approaching the 100 deadliest days of the year? For many people, summer is a fun and relaxing time, especially for young people who are on a break from school. So why is it that some people view it negatively, as if there is this substantial risk?

Typically, what people are referring to is an increase in the number of fatal accidents on the road. The summer can be a very dangerous time to drive. Many people suffer serious injuries or even lose loved ones in multi-car accidents that they did not cause. This spike in fatal accident rates is what gives the summer months the nickname of the “100 Deadliest Days.”

Why does this happen?

In many respects, teenage drivers are responsible for the increase in fatalities. They are the age group that sees their fatal accident rate increase dramatically in June, July and August.

The reason for this is that these young people are no longer in school. Summer break may feel relaxing and carefree to them, but it also means that they have more time to drive. Teenage drivers have a disproportionately high fatal accident rate at all times, as one of the most dangerous age brackets on the road. Because they drive more in the summer, this pushes the overall statistics up, and there’s a spike in fatal crashes.

During the school year, this rate declines because many young drivers are in school all day, and it simply reduces the exposure to risk for everyone else on the road.
