Common Seattle Quadriplegia Injuries

The human body can take a great deal of punishment, but there are some areas that are incredibly delicate and sensitive. Injury or trauma with the wrong amount of impact or pressure on the head, neck, or spine can cause paralysis. Each year, over 10,000 people are diagnosed with quadriplegia in the U.S.

What is Quadriplegia?

There are three different types of paralysis injuries: paraplegia, hemiplegia, and quadriplegia. Paraplegia is a paralysis of the lower body. Hemiplegia is a paralysis of one side of the body. Quadriplegia is the most serious paralysis. Quadriplegia affects the upper and lower body, usually from the shoulder below. Quadriplegia sufferers can have trouble breathing, along with their mobility issues.

Common Causes of Quadriplegia

There are conditions like cerebral palsy or strokes that can cause quadriplegia. But, most people suffering from quadriplegia had a spinal injury of some kind. Hardwick & Pendergast, P.S. has assisted many people and their families affected by quadriplegia injuries. Here are the most common causes of quadriplegia we’ve encountered:

  • Automobile accidents: Accidents involving cars, trucks, buses, and motorcycles are the leading cause of quadriplegia injuries nationwide. The impact of the crash is not the only contributor to quadriplegia injuries: drivers not wearing seat belts and accidents caused by automobile defects are also common.
  • Workplace accidents: Any workplace can be dangerous, but industries like construction are especially dangerous. Falls from scaffolding, being struck by equipment, and other accidents can easily happen at a busy construction site.
  • Slip, Trip, and Falls: In a slip, trip, and fall, your body can suffer an impact equal to a car accident when you strike a hard surface. A slip, trip, and fall down stairs or in other dangerous areas can cause quadriplegia injuries.
