The intersection of Arnold Road and Interstate 20 near San de Fuca will soon be under construction to fix the dangerous road conditions that currently exist, according to an article in The Whidbey News-Times. In June, the Washington State Department of Transportation awarded a contract to Interwest Construction to address the dangerous conditions at the intersection.
The intersection is well-known as a site of car accidents in the area. Between 2005 and 2009, ninety collisions occurred at the intersection, many of them fatal. A sharp curve and non-level ground near the intersection make it difficult for drivers to see cross traffic as they approach the intersection, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). The lack of visibility has lead to many Washington intersection accidents because drivers have trouble seeing vehicles on I-20.
The construction company plans to flatten the roads approaching the intersection and to make the curves broader so that drivers can see around them more easily. The WSDOT also plans to add lanes to I-20 in the area in order to relieve traffic backups.
