Study Pinpoints Intersections Most Likely to Be Dangerous

What Makes Intersections So Dangerous?

Intersections are notoriously dangerous for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. In order for multiple parties to cross paths safely, each party must rely on the other to obey traffic signals, stop signs, or simply yield the right of way. It only takes a moment of distraction or a single careless split-decision for a serious or fatal accident to take place at an intersection.

At Pendergast Law, our experienced Seattle personal injury lawyers have dedicated their careers to ensuring that those injured or harmed through no fault of their own get the financial compensation they deserve. Crash Rate Factors at Dangerous Intersections

Over a period of three years, the University of Kentucky conducted an extensive study of more than 7,000 different intersections in order to determine which types of intersections have the highest crash rates. The study examined over 19,000 intersection crashes, which were then classified under common factors, such as:

  • Number of lanes,
  • Volume of traffic,
  • Whether the intersection is located in an urban or rural area, and
  • Whether the lanes are divided between opposing traffic

Not surprisingly, the study found that intersections located in urban or highly populated areas have a crash rate that is nearly twice as high as rural intersections.

Additionally, the most dangerous intersections also experience an overall higher volume of traffic on a daily basis and accidents are more likely to occur on four-lane roads in which there is no divider between the opposing lanes of traffic.

However, in both urban and rural areas, four-lane roads without dividers saw the highest crash rate compared to divided four-lane roads, indicating that a physical divider between opposing traffic lanes can have a marked impact on intersection safety.
