Injury Survivors Get Help From a Seattle Personal Injury Lawyer  >  Pedicab Accident

Last updated on May 10, 2022

Pedicabs, also known as cycle rickshaws, bike taxis, velotaxis or bike cabs, are a human-powered means of transportation popular in many cities around the world. They come in various wheel and seat configurations, but most have three wheels (tricycles) and carry two passengers. Pedicabs were first introduced to the United States at the 1962 World’s Fair in Seattle, where they are still in use to this day. Many American cities have followed Seattle’s lead and now have pedicabs, including New York City; Washington, D.C.; and Portland.

While pedicabs may be a fun way to get around or do some sightseeing in certain parts of Seattle, they can also be a dangerous way to travel. If you or a family member has been injured in a pedicab accident, you or they may likely be looking at significant time off from work and mounting medical bills.

To recover losses stemming from a pedicab accident, you will need to file a personal injury lawsuit against the responsible party. To find out more about your legal rights and options, call Pendergast Law. Dial 888-539-9211 for a free consultation.

Pedicab Tragedy In The Emerald City

Most Seattle residents remember the tragic pedicab accident that occurred in the summer of 2008. A Connecticut couple visiting the Emerald City to celebrate their 25th anniversary decided to take in the city’s sights by hailing a pedicab. Soon, they found themselves heading down a steep grade on Cedar Street. That’s when tragedy struck. As the pedicab neared a red light, the pedicab’s driver applied the brake – which failed. The pedicab ran the red light and collided with a scooter and a van. The 60-year-old male pedicab passenger was thrown into the street, where he was struck and killed by the van.

While tragedies like these are rare, pedicab accidents do happen in Seattle. Contact a dedicated Seattle personal injury attorney if you or a loved one has been involved a pedicab accident.

How Safe Are Pedicabs?

Pedicabs themselves aren’t inherently unsafe; the environment (including hazardous road conditions) in which they exist is what can be dangerous. Pedicabs don’t travel very fast, but cars and other motor vehicles around pedicabs do. A fully loaded pedicab weighs several hundred pounds. A compact car weighs in at 3,000 to 4,500 pounds. A pedicab has no chance in a collision with a car. Pedicabs are also generally open, with little or no outer protection to protect their passengers. Seat belts are not required in Seattle pedicabs, nor are helmets for the passengers.

Determining Fault In A Washington Pedicab Accident

Determining who is at fault in a pedicab accident depends on the specifics of the accident. In the tragic case mentioned above, the pedicab parts manufacturer that made the malfunctioning brake was held liable for the accident, along with the company that owned the pedicab. In other cases, the driver of the pedicab may be held liable. And, of course, a reckless, impaired, distracted or speeding motorist could also be found at fault for an accident.
