Seattle Lawyers Help You Understand Washington Bike Accident Laws

Bicycle riding is a healthful, economical, and environmentally-friendly mode of transportation as well as an increasingly popular form of recreation, but if you’re going to be riding your bicycle on Washington roads, you’ll have to abide by the state’s bicycle laws in order to stay safe. Motorists must also be aware of these laws to make sure that they do not operate their vehicle in a way that presents road hazards to bicyclists. Drivers who ignore bicycle road laws and cause injury to a bicyclist may be held liable for the damages caused.

WA Bicycle Laws Overview

To help avoid unnecessary or dangerous maneuvers or accidents, all motorists and bicyclists should be aware of and abide by the following laws:

  • Bicyclists are not required to wear a helmet by state law (though some counties and cities do require it), but all bicyclists should.
  • A cyclist has all the rights and responsibilities of vehicle drivers under Revised Code of Washington (RCW) 46.61.755 and may be ticketed for violating traffic laws under RCW 46.61.750.
  • Certain roads may be closed to bicyclists for safety reasons; you may view these closed roads here. Also certain cities or other local governments may ban cycling on certain roads or on sidewalks.
  • Only two cyclists may ride alongside each other.
  • Cyclists must equip their bicycle with a white front light that is visible for 500 feet and a rear reflector.
  • Bicyclists riding at speeds less than the flow of traffic must ride as far right in the right side through lane as is safe (except when making turns). This also applies when there is a bike lane.
